Hopscotch Music Festival

Hopscotch Music Festival

While everyone is making plans for a supercharged fun and exciting Labor Day weekend, you might want to save a little money and energy left for the weekend after and make it over to the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina. With 155 bands in 3 days playing at 13 different downtown club venues and the headliners outside in the middle of the downtown city plaza, Hopscotch offers a music experience unlike what you normally consider for a festival. Based in the downtown scene, Raleigh’s Hopscotch venue allows people to see great shows all day in an open environment that enhances both the festival go-er and vendor weekends. By being able to go from show to show without being confined to stay inside the barrier of festival grounds, you can actually enjoy Raleigh by going to get something to eat at a local restaurant, stop in for a drink at a bar that’s not a Hopscotch venue to get away from the crowds for a little bit, go home and come back, or do whatever you like in between. So check out some daytime bar shows, take a break for dinner, head to City Plaza to catch one of the amazing headliners like The Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices, Drive By Truckers, Superchunk, The Dodos or The Light Pines, then head over to the late night club shows, with the last shows of the night starting at 12:30am and running until the bars close.

With over 30,000 in attendance for its inaugural year in 2010, Hopscotch is bound to sell out and bring more to the table this year, with VIP wristbands having sold out over 3 months before the festivities are to begin, and having better headliners than last year. With Panda Bear playing in City Plaza, al beit after a killer set by Broken Social Scene, the music and the atmosphere of the outdoor venue mixed just about as well as cheese puffs and yogurt. But this time, you’ll be singing “do you realize” for a whole other reason, combined with pizza and beer and outdoor music that makes more than just sense. So head down to Raleigh September 8-10th for The Independent’s very own music festival, and start the fall season off right with a different and unique live music experience.

I will be in the Raleigh area that weekend, and I am sold on the Hopscotch Festival. Raleigh is becoming one of my favorite places to visit, and it is great to see that they are getting some sweet festivals!

Last year this was one of my favorite events. Glad to know that they are bringing it back. My recommendation is to check out Dinosaur Feathers at Kings Barcade. One of my favorite acts.
